In times of financial crisis there is an alternative banking system, which has proved to be more stable, than the traditional, Western banking system. I mean - the Islamic banking. The financial systems in the Islamic countries, even in those, who were formerly Soviet republics - like Kazakhstan - are a real alternative, while the Russian business and science lacks necessary knowledge to adapt its finance to the severe conditions of the crisis. We will be discussing this issue with our guests the Head of the Russian Islamic Committee Geidar Jemal and Financial analyst Sergey Aleksashenko.

The last few years have been volatile for banks around the globe, but Islamic banking has managed to steer a more steady course and is growing fast, as Al Jazeera's Imran Khan reports from Doha. The sector is worth billions of dollars and, according to some estimates, has grown by 20 per cent. The concept of Islamic banking is based on making profit through trade rather than interest, which is against Islamic religious law. Almost every bank in Qatar is boasting its Islamic credentials, and they are not alone. Speaking to Al Jazeera about the phenomenon, R Seetheraman, CEO of Doha Bank, said: "Islamic banking is not confined to only traditional Muslims. Non-Muslims are [also keen on] Islamic banking." He said the shift to Islamic banking has already been seen in countries such as Japan, Korea, Singapore and Canada.

Alternative view on islamic banking. Islamic banking (or participant banking) (Arabic: المصرفية الإسلامية‎) cliams that their banking or banking activity that is consistent with the principles of Islamic law (Sharia) and its practical application through the development of Islamic economics. Sharia prohibits the fixed or floating payment or acceptance of specific interest or fees (known as Riba or usury) for loans of money. Investing in businesses that provide goods or services considered contrary to Islamic principles is also Haraam (forbidden). While these principles were used as the basis for a flourishing economy in earlier times, it is only in the late 20th century that a number of Islamic banks were formed to apply these principles to private or semi-private commercial institutions within the Muslim community.

Bankers, economists and researchers gathered in Tehran's Tarbiat-e- Modarres University to share views on different aspects of modern Islamic Banking. The seminar focused on providing finance with special emphasis on "Qarzolhasanah" which is an Islamic interest free loan. Islam considers helping other through giving such loans as the most rewarded people by God. In the Presence of Iran's minister of economy representatives of some 24 Iranian banks and financial institutions discussed the latest achievements as well as ways to globalize Islamic banking. Gaining interest on loans is forbidden in Islam. Instead Islamic economics is based on profit sharing rather than interest according to the Holy Quran. This means that people must work for the money they earn and deals should be based on mutual profit or loss for the partners. Such loans are given to those in need according to the same law. Despite the excessive demand for such loans, Iranian banks and financial institutions have a small share in rendering such services. These institutions blame the lack of enough financial resources for their shortcoming. Iran has a bank dedicated to interest free loans. The Mehr Qarzolhasane Bank of Iran says that it has established more than 350 branches across Iran during the past 4 years. In 1987 an Islamic Banking system was first introduced in Iran making it mandatory for all financial institutions to abide by its articles.
