If you opted for 1-year CDs then the average rate would have been 4.769%. At this point, 6-month rates and 1-year rates are quite a bit above the historical averages. Historical CD rates for 3-year CDs have been 5.071%, 4-year CDs have been 5.170%, and 5-year CDs have been 5.383%. This means the short-term treasuries have a higher yield than the longer-term. Historically, a drop in rates has followed an inverted yield curve. Certificate of deposits with longer maturity periods pay higher rates than those with shorter maturities. www.ctvvancouverisland.ca SAANICH -- Inflation is on the rise according to numbers released today by Statistics Canada. Overall inflation rose slightly from 3.1% in August to 3.2% in September. It maybe small but it's an increase, after many experts predicted the rate was on its way down. The increase means high energy, gas and food prices will continue to make it hard on Canadians to live, and live well. More alarming, the core inflation rate rose from 1.9% in August of last year to 2.2%, and those numbers exclude volatile items that often incur price swings. It's the highest core inflation number released since December of 2008. A sign the Canadian economy is still in a fragile state, as it continues to recover from a recession. It also means interest rate cuts are not likely. Instead analysts predict the Bank Of Canada will hold firm, if not raise rates in the third quarter of next year. In his opening comments, Mister Bernanke explained a decision by the Federal Open Market Committee to leave its main short-term interest rate near zero. The committee had just completed a two-day meeting. Dhaka, Dec 15 (bdnews24.com)— Call money rate hit a record high of 175 percent as banks rushed to collect liquid funds. The banks were meeting the central bank's directive to increase cash reserve ratio that took effect on Wednesday The highest call rate was 62.5 percent on Tuesday, 40 percent on Monday and 35 percent on Sunday. The Bangladesh Bank issued an instruction to increase the cash reserve ratio (CRR) by 0.5 percentage point to 6 percent and the overall statutory liquidity ratio to 19 percent with effect from Wednesday. That means if a bank has Tk 100 deposit, it has to maintain minimum Tk 6 as cash and Tk 13 in the form of bonds with the central bank. The banks are under pressure to meet the Bangladesh Bank's requirement as the new directive would wipe out about Tk 30 billion cash fund from the market. Raising import payment, diversion of cash to the stock market and reluctance of the Bangladesh Bank to provide liquidity support are some reasons behind the recent fund crisis. The Bangladesh Bank on Tuesday lent Tk 11.47 billion to banks and financial institutions for one day. The central bank on Monday lent Tk 9.77 for one day and on Sunday Tk 7.01 billion for the same period. The 14 primary dealers also took credit of Tk 37.39 billion for one-day on Monday and Tk 33.71 billion on Sunday for the same period.
