Richard Bove argues that the bank is not risking its own capital through losing proprietary trading desks since it is just an agent or financial intermediary, therefore there should be no discernible effect on the performance of the US financial sector. I am not that convinced but I agree that the losses aren't as high as they seem. The problem is that it is notoriously difficult to measure bank capital properly. Ask the people at Basel and they will tell you it is not easy. On Dodd-Frank and the Volcker rule: The regulations on bank prop trading look quite complex. But I thought that banks would only be allowed to provide liquidity ("take the other side of a trade for a client) for certain commodities where delivery may be needed and where the banks had a traditional area of expertise in bringing together legitimate buyers and sellers for the underlying physical asset? I could be wrong. Richard Bove also says that the US banks are not exposed to Europe. I think that is right. But how sure can you really be? He loses points for me though when he focuses on operating earnings -- the discount of the company price to cash doesn't really matter for the financial markets. This would be the case when you understand that the amount of cash in the company after you cancel out the liabilities against the assets isn't what matters. Tim Backshall makes the same point.
