By placing a small device on the slot used by ATMs to avoid skimming (another method of theft) these crafty thieves can actually make away with your card. They grab your PIN by either looking over your shoulder or placing an otherwise unnoticeable overlay on the buttons that captures your impression when entering your pin. Once you've walked away from the ATM to call the bank and complain and have your card deactivated, it only takes seconds for the thief to retrieve your card and grab your cash. First, only use ATMs at your bank and/or a trusted branch near you. SAANICH - Saanich Police say thieves using compromised pin pad machines have siphoned thousands of dollars from the accounts of shoppers at two area grocery stores. The debit card scam has netted the criminals more than $400000 and police are still searching for the culprits. Saanich Police say the scams were discovered at Safeway at Tillicum Centre and Fairway Market near McKenzie Avenue and Shelbourne Street. Anyone who used a pin pad at either store during December 2009 or January 2010 should check their bank statements closely. Many of the victims have been notified by their financial institutions and new debit cards have been issued. To combat this type of fraud Saanich Police have been placing Pin Watch stickers on point of sale machines after verifying that the equipment belongs to the retailer. Police say its important to be meticulous when checking bank statements and to report any suspicious activity immediately.

SINGAPORE: Police are investigating several cases of unauthorised withdrawals from POSB and DBS Bank accounts allegedly made in Malaysia. Some POSB and DBS Bank customers informed DBS on Wednesday that unauthorized withdrawals were made in Malaysia through their DBS/POSB ATM and debit cards. As at 8pm Thursday, about 200 customers have informed the bank of unauthorized withdrawals. The average amount withdrawn was about S$1000. DBS Bank's managing director and head for consumer banking group (Singapore), Jeremy Soo, told MediaCorp that the bank de-activated the cards immediately and it is now taking steps to compensate affected customers in full. DBS says anyone who believes that their ATM or debit cards may have been compromised should contact the bank immediately on 1800-220-1111 or visit any DBS/POSB branch. It assures customers that they will be fully compensated for any unauthorised withdrawals within 24 hours. DBS adds that investigations are under way and it is validating all ATM/Debit card transactions made in Malaysia over the past few days. The bank will alert customers if they detect any unusual activity on their accounts. One victim, 27-year-old Ms Chen, discovered something was amiss when she checked her bank account online on Wednesday night. "Some transactions done, five times.
